New Drydock Facilities on West Coast
Cruise lines have long maintained that one reason they don't home
port more ships on the west coast is the lack of available dry dock
facilities which can accommodate the larger cruise ships. That
rationale is soon to be eliminated.
The American City Business Journal in San Francisco reports that the
Port of San Francisco has entered an agreement with BAE Systems San
Francisco Ship Repair to pay for dredging and structural
reinforcements to clear the way for Pier 70 to accept the largest
cruise ships in the world. The move would make San Francisco's repair
facility the only one on the West Coast that can accept the giant
ocean liners. "It will add to our competitive situation in terms of
what we sell to the cruise lines," a port official said.
