Save the Delta Queen!
The Delta Queen, the last authentic steamboat still cruising the Mississippi River (for more than 80 years) is facing her final season in 2008. Since she is a wooden ship carrying more than 50 passengers, she's in violation of maritime fire-prevention laws. However, because she's a river boat rather than an ocean-going vessel, she's been granted exemptions from the law for the past 40 years. But that exemption is due to expire in 2008.
However, Rep. Steve Chabot of Ohio has introduced a bill to the House that would once-again extend the exemption. To read about this effort, go to www.save-the-delta-queen.org, and learn where you can get further information on how to write your own representative and urge him or her to support the bill.
