United Institutes Second Checked Bag Charge

In a move I'd hoped would never come, but feared would happen sooner or later, United becomes the first major US carrier to institute a charge for a second checked bag.

For all tickets purchased tomorrow or later, and flying starting May 5, most passengers will only be allowed to check one 50 pound bag free of charge. A second bag will be a flat $25 up to 50 pounds.

Elite members (Platinum or above) of United's Mileage Plus program, or the equivalent level on any of their Star Alliance partners (such as US Air) will be allowed at least 2 checked bags free of charge, depending on their level.

Unfortunately, I believe this is only the first of a string of similar announcements from the other major US carriers. A couple weeks ago, Southwest announced they were reducing their free luggage allotment from 3 bags to 2. Expect to see similar announcements soon from American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and US Air. And be prepared to pay.

The link to the exact policy on United's web site can be found at United Domestic Luggage Policy. At this time, they've not yet changed their International policy. Yet.
