Update on Efforts to Save Delta Queen
As we've discussed before, the iconic paddlewheeler Delta Queen is facing a deadline after which she may not continue to steam her way along America's rivers. Due to fire regulations, which have been waived by an act of Congress many times, she has been forced to schedule her last sailing for this November when her current exemption expires.
However, lovers of this historic ship aren't giving up. Despite opposition to another waiver by Congressman James Oberstar of Minnesota, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, backers are finding a way around his blockage of a stand-alone bill and attaching a waiver to the Coast Guard Reauthorization Bill soon to be voted on by Congress. This effort is being led by Congressman Steve Chabot of Ohio.
We'll keep you posted!
