More on RCCL's Haiti Relief Efforts

Following up on the promised aid to Haiti, Royal Caribbean has detailed their future plans for relief efforts to the devastated country.

Royal Caribbean is partnering with charitable organizations – such as Food for the Poor, Pan American Development Foundation and the Solano Foundation, the company’s foundation in Haiti, to provide additional assistance to the people of Haiti. Royal Caribbean will also be delivering much needed goods and supplies to Haiti via their cruise ships.

“The effect of the earthquake on Haiti has been catastrophic, leaving the country in need of not only immediate support, but assistance in their long-term recovery,” said Richard Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of RCCL. “Royal Caribbean wants to do its part to help out not only the general response, but also our hundreds of Haitian employees and their families through this disaster. In addition to our financial contribution, Royal Caribbean will continue to provide economic support through the continuous business we bring to Labadee.”

Leslie Voltaire, special envoy of the government of Haiti to the United Nations, said: “Given the terrible economic and social challenges we now face in Haiti, we welcome the continuation of the positive economic benefits that the cruise ship calls to Labadee contribute to our country.”

Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas made a call Jan. 15 at Labadee, Haiti, to deliver supplies for Haiti. The supplies were loaded on the ship during its call in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and include items such as rice, dried beans, powdered milk, water and canned goods. In addition, 100 percent of the company’s net revenue from Labadee will be contributed to the relief effort.

In the next two weeks, the following ships are scheduled to call on Labadee with additional supplies: Navigator of the Seas on Monday, Jan. 18; Liberty of the Seas on Tuesday, Jan. 19; and Celebrity Solstice on Friday, Jan. 22. When the supplies arrive in Labadee, they will be transported to an offsite location to be distributed by Food for the Poor, a long time partner of Royal Caribbean in Haiti.

In addition to working with Food for the Poor to distribute relief supplies, guests sailing onboard Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises will be able to make a donation to Food for the Poor’s Haiti Relief Fund, via a charge to their onboard account. Guests who would like to contribute immediately can visit www.foodforthepoor.org/royalcaribbean to make a donation. Royal Caribbean also plans to use a portion of the $1 million donation to augment the company’s Crew Relief Fund, which can be drawn on by any of the company’s more than 200 Haitian crew members for assistance, as well as to match employee contributions to the partner organizations. As the initial response effort gives way to the long-term recovery effort, Royal Caribbean said it will consider further support efforts. For more information, visit www.rclinvestor.com.

Current inside fares are less than $1,000 SINGLE OCCUPANCY! If you've dreamed of a classic Cunard Transatlantic and sail solo... DO NOT WAIT! River Cruising: River cruise lines continue to offer tremendous savings, with 2-for-1 pricing, free or reduced air and other special offers. These specials are frequently changing, but if you're considering a river cruise for 2010, don't wait. Unlike 2009, many special dates are already extremely limited.

This is the time to book your 2010 (or even 2011) cruise!

If you're thinking of Alaska this year, I can't emphasize enough to BOOK NOW! Because of the reduction in the number of ships and sailings, I expect Alaska cruises and cruisetours to be going up in price throughout the year. Booking now locks in your preferred cabin and pricing.

Remember that several lines will allow me to adjust your fare if they lower prices, EVEN AFTER FINAL PAYMENT! If you're concerned with getting the best fare, and who isn't, ask for information on these policies. I never charge a fee for changes to your booking, unless the cruise line imposes one directly. So you're protected when booking with me!

Call me at 303-690-8937, or toll-free at 888-SAIL-123 (888-724-5123), or email at amber@cruiseresource.com for more information on any sailing, offer, or to book your cruise! You deserve a great vacation in 2010!

Am posting this week's Happy Hour Specials early this week as they're HUGE, especially from Royal Caribbean. A little of everything, and some astonishing prices, even over Thanksgiving!.

For example, Enchantment of the Seas' 11-28 8 night Southern Caribbean from Ft. Lauderdale starting at $199/person with D2 Balcony at $599/person? Egads! How about an 11 night Mexican Riviera sailing on the Radiance 11/30 starting at $599 for an Oceanview?

Want Thanksgiving sailings? How about Radiance of the Seas 9-Nt Mexican Riviera on 11/21 starting at $549/person for Oceanview? Nice! Something more exotic for Thanksgiving? Take a look at the 11/21 Splendour of the Seas' 10-Nt Venice sailing starting at $399/person Inside and $499/person Oceanview! Or Voyager of the Seas' 7-Nt Barcelona sailing on 11/22 with a $399/person Inside or $499/person Balcony fare!

Almost all of Royal Caribbean's Happy Hours this week are on reduced single supplement as well!

Prefer Celebrity? No problem!

Are you aching to try out the fabulous new Celebrity Equinox? Sneak away for a 4-night taste on 11/19 (and even catch the Oasis of the Seas in port!) at $449/person for Veranda and only $599/person for Aqua Class! See what everyone's been talking about.

Thanksgiving cruise? They can do that on the Equinox for you too. 11/23 from Ft. Lauderdale, 11-Nt. Ultimate Caribbean starting at $949/person Oceanview.

Do you live in the Mid-Atlantic states? Try out the Mercury from Baltimore! Starting at only $399/person for a 9-nt sailing on 12/12.

Celebrity is also sharing the love for solo occupancy cruisers with mostly 150% supplements!

We even have Azamara this week! Take a peek at the 24-Nt Athens to Singapore on Azamara Quest starting at $1,299/person Inside and $1,399/person Oceanview. Unbelievable price for this amazing ship!

As always, these fares are available one day only. For Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, they're applicable on Tuesday, October 27, and Azamara on Wednesday, October 28. Best bet is to call or email me prior to the date so we can discuss your options and I can secure the cabin and pricing as soon as it is open to booking in my system (long before you can book it by calling the cruise line direct!). If you're wanting any type of pre-holidays getaway, this week looks fabulous for booking!

Happy Hour Time! Big from RCCL, No XCitement from Celebrity

I'd held off posting this Happy Hour as I was hoping that Celebrity was just delayed in releasing their Happy Hour Specials for this week. However, it appears there won't be any, so we just have Royal Caribbean. Fortunately, there's an abundance there!

Shorter cruises starting at $179/person to 7-nt from $309/person, 10-nt Mediterranean from $449/person (no, that's not a mis-print!), and 12-nt Southern Caribbean from Bayonne at $749/person for an inside or only $1,249/person in a balcony!

There are 8 pages of goodness to be found in this week's Happy Hour Specials. See if there's something for you!

More Terrific Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Happy Hours

It's the time of year where I really love posting Happy Hours, as there are usually amazing values offered. This week is no exception.

For Royal Caribbean, of particular note is a 9-Nt Canada-New England sailing on 10/1, which should be fabulous for color, with a balcony at only $849/person AND a reduced supplement for solos!

If you are looking for 7-nt Caribbean, there are several Freedom of the Seas sailings starting at $549/person.

West coast? Mariner of the Seas 7-nighters are here too starting at $339/person and reduced single supplements. However, on the 9/27 sailing, along with the 11/8, 11/15/AND 11/29 sailings, I have some cabins at $299/person, and that's not even a Happy Hour rate, so that can be booked any time!

Want something shorter? While east coasters are used to having lots of good deals on short sailings, finally the West Coast is getting some Happy Hour love, too! How about Radiance of the Seas 4-night Mexican Riviera starting at $179/person? Amazing!

Finally on the Royal Caribbean side is a 13-Nt San Diego to Miami Panama Canal sailing which is the lowest I think I've ever seen for a full transit starting at $849/person, and there's a reduced single supplement on that one, too!

Those are just a sampling of the HUGE number of offers this week. Check out the link below for all the options!

On the Celebrity side, while there aren't as many offers, both of them are excellent! The Equinox 13-Nt sailing from Rome on 10/10 starting at $1,349/person is amazing for this beautiful new ship, and the Summit's 14-Nt sailing from Venice on 11/14 starting at $949/person with Concierge balconies at only $1,349/person is a steal! And better yet for my solo occupancy clients, both are on reduced single supplement!

Here are the links to the full lists. As always, these are good for sale on Tuesday, September 22 only, and it's best to call me before Tuesday so I can reserve your cabin as soon as the pricing becomes available to ensure your choice of cabin and lock in the price.

Triple the Savings - It's Happy Hour Time

Since it's the week that Azamara has its Deluxe Deals, we have 3 sets of Happy Hours this week!

Headlining the offers are two Celebrity sailings. The October 12 11-night Wine Cruise on the Mercury from Vancouver starts at only $599/person for an inside cabin! And there's even a reduced single supplement on this one!

Also an exceptional value is the 17-night Panama Canal sailing on the Mercury departing San Diego on 10/23. Insides starting at only $799/person and Oceanviews at $899, plus a reduced single supplement! If you're looking for a longer getaway this fall, these two are truly special deals.

On Royal Caribbean, we see the return of 7-night deals out of Miami. The Liberty of the Seas September 26 Eastern Caribbean sailing starts at only $499/person for a Promenade cabin, with Oceanviews, Balconies and even Grand Suites also on Happy Hour this week. In addition, the Serenade of the Seas has a couple nice Panama Canal offerings, lots of shorter cruises on sale, and some Europe and Holy Land sailings if you are looking for something more exotic.

Azamara is offering two 14-night Southern Mediterranean sailings this fall, starting at only $1,599/person for an Oceanview, and there is a reduced single supplement for both sailings as well.

So no matter what you're looking for this fall, this week's Happy Hours may have exactly what you want at a price you can't refuse!

As always, these prices are good for one day only, Tuesday, September 15 (or Wednesday, September 16 in the case of Azamara). Contact me as soon as possible so I can lock in your pricing and cabin as soon as the pricing becomes available.

Labor Day's Over - Time to Play - Happy Hour Specials!

While many may have been celebrating a long holiday weekend, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity were busy putting together their Happy Hour specials for this week, and there are some great offers in there!

The best offers for both lines this week are with repositioning cruises (take a look at the Mercury Panama Canal on 10/13, for example), along with Canada/New England, Bermuda, and some amazing values on short fall getaways. September/October traditionally brings terrific prices on last-minute cruising. Do you want to take advantage of them?

As usual, best to contact me ASAP, yes, even on Labor Day, so that I can lock in your cabin and price as soon as they become available in the system. Call or email me; I am working today!

Royal Caribbean Announces New Price Protection Policy - Is It a Good Thing?

Royal Caribbean today rolled out their new "Price Guarantee" program, allowing for price protection on almost every fare up to 72 hours prior to sailing, excluding "new bookings only" fares such as Happy Hours. On its face, it's a good thing, but is it really?

Experienced travel agents and savvy cruisers have long known that RCCL (and sister companies Celebrity and Azamara) offered fare protection all the way to sailing date. Should the fare go down, with those same "new booking" exceptions, even after final payment, Royal Caribbean would either lower the fare prior to final payment, or issue a refund back to the passenger's credit card if the reduction occurred after final payment.

In the very small print of the new offer, there's a change to this program. If the fare reduction occurs after final payment, your refund will come in the form of an onboard credit.

I'll admit, for most fare reductions, that will be welcome by cruisers, as it will essentially cover the expenses they'd have paid onboard anyway, such as gratuities, alcohol, soda, excursions, casino expenses, etc. However, I have experienced last-minute reductions for clients which were of such a significant dollar expense as to make the onboard credit amount difficult to spend during the cruise. Especially if the passengers don't drink alcohol or take cruise line excursions. While the amounts are refundable if not used onboard, it still puts the responsibility on the client to obtain that refund.

The terms and conditions also give a clue that this may be an effort on RCCL's part to later discontinue the program, as the wording states that the "Price Protection Program may be discontinued or modified at any time without prior notice". I hope that's not the case, and it's just a case of the lawyers getting in their $.02, but it does concern me.

I also expect there will be confusion with regard to whether or not group bookings can be adjusted after final payment, as the terms and conditions and FAQs seem to contradict one another, but I do believe that as long as the group booking is made in full, the fare protection will be honored. The terms & conditions just seek to ensure that group bookings not paid in full (and which have different conditions than individual bookings) aren't refunded improperly.

Azamara and Celebrity announced their versions of this program a few weeks ago. Terms are virtually identical.

Obviously, onboard credits cost Royal Caribbean less than refunds do, as what they sell onboard results in a profit to them. It's also easier to administer than credit card refunds. I don't begrudge RCCL this at all, and in many situations it's perfectly appropriate and welcome by cruisers.

So while I definitely still applaud RCCL and its sister companies for having a policy of allowing for fare reductions, even after final payment, and think it gives them a huge competitive advantage over some of their competitors who consider final payment the final time they have to worry about their fare, I actually think this is a step back in the actual policy. It's going to get a LOT of attention, on cruise boards, the media, and in buzz, but for the wrong reasons. It's mostly a marketing ploy, not a new program worthy of note. And I certainly hope it's not the beginning of the end of fare price protection by RCCL, Celebrity and Azamara.

I want the fare protection policies to continue, as they definitely help both me in securing bookings, and also benefits my clients in knowing they can be confident in booking these brands any time they want. Don't disappoint us RCCL!

Celebrity Select Dining Ready for Reservations

Celebrity announced that they will begin taking reservations today for Celebrity Select Dining, their flexible time dining option. The reservations are open fleet-wide, though service will roll out ship-by-ship, beginning with the Equinox on September 26. Other ships will start service in the first quarter of 2010.

Similar to other lines' programs, Celebrity Select Dining allows you to dine at the time you wish in the main dining room, anytime between 6-9:30PM. However, they also allow you to make reservations, either at the same time for each night, or differing times, before you board or once you arrive on the ship. Celebrity Select Dining will still have the same menus and dress codes, all that changes is the time you dine.

To participate in Celebrity Select Dining, you must pre-pay your gratuities (since you may have different waiters), both dining and stateroom. Once the gratuities are on your booking you can go online to your booking and make the desired reservations. Groups up to 20 people can be accommodated with this system.

It was only a matter of time until Celebrity initiated a flexible time dining program, as they are the last of the mainstream lines to do so. Cruising is adapting to trends and desires of their passengers, and they've spoken loud and clear that a certain number don't want to be tied to a certain dining time. However, most lines aren't eliminating their traditional fixed-time dining options, so no matter what you prefer on your vacation, there's a cruise and line to suit your needs!

For more information, go to Celebrity Select Dining.

And the November 9 12-night first sailing is on Happy Hour this week, with reduced supplements! Take a look!

Watching the fares to Europe dropping for fall travel? Thinking you'd like to take advantage of them? Then take a look at Azamara Journey's 14-night sailing from Athens. Great price for balconies on a true Deluxe line.

It's Only Happy at Royal Caribbean This Week

Happy Hour, that is. Sorry this is late this week, but I was waiting for the Celebrity and Azamara Happy Hours to be posted, and they just did. Unfortunately, what they posted was that there would be no Happy Hours this week.

So we have Royal Caribbean's offers! I'll admit they're a bit thin this week, too, consisting of 3- and 4-night Caribbean and Bahamas sailings. But if you're wanting a last-minute getaway, these will be perfect!

Of course, these are on sale only Tuesday, July 21, so give me a call now if you're interested.

Celebrity Captain's Club Gets Overhaul

It's long been rumored, and discussed extensively on cruise boards, but finally it's been announced: the new Celebrity Captain's Club! Well, sort of. They're announcing the majority of it at least. They did also say that more components will be rolling out in the next few months as well.

For today's announcement, the highlights being added to the existing program are the Captain's Club Celebration (replacing the traditional Captain's Club cocktail party), significantly improved Internet and laundry benefits for Select and Elite tier members; and a new onboard lounge exclusively for Elite members. The brand has even introduced a new theme for Captain’s Club, which doubles as its ongoing commitment to members: “The center of our attention.”

But these improvements are only the beginning. During the second half of 2009, Celebrity will expand the Captain’s Club with a variety of other new features, all of which will be announced prior to taking effect.

“Our new Captain’s Club was designed based on a tremendous amount of research, feedback from our members, and advice from our travel partners,” said Hanrahan. “We want to ensure that we deliver every aspect to our guests’ utmost satisfaction, so we’re choosing to roll out the enhancements in intervals, beginning with improvements to the member experience onboard.”

The most visible change to the majority of members will be the Captain’s Club Celebration. Soon available across the fleet, with the exception of Celebrity Xpedition, all members will be invited to this exclusive event once per sailing. Redesigned to be a highlight of every cruise, the spirited affair will provide the perfect opportunity to meet fellow members, chat with the Captain and senior shipboard officers, experience interactive cooking demonstrations, and enjoy the unique “CC Jams” performance by a variety of shipboard musicians.

For the most loyal passengers interested in a quiet haven of their own, Celebrity is introducing the Captain’s Club Lounge at Michael’s Club, exclusively for Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions each morning and early evening. The new Lounge will offer a casual coffeehouse-style experience from 8AM to 10AM, with complimentary espressos, teas and other menu items, a variety of reading materials, and, on Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Equinox, wi-fi access.

Every evening from 4PM to 6PM, Captain’s Club Elite members and their stateroom/suite companions can return to the Lounge to enjoy socializing with fellow members, participate in a wine tasting event, or simply relax and enjoy a quiet, complimentary drink before dinner.

In recognition of their desire to stay in touch with family and friends while vacationing, Elite members will now receive complimentary Internet packages, while Select members will receive a significantly discounted rate on any Internet package. Also within the new program, Captain’s Club Select- and Elite-level members can now enjoy new laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing benefits, based on the length of their cruise.

Celebrity also is extending its pledge to make members the center of attention by engaging many in the entirely new Captain’s Club Advisory Board, to ensure its most loyal guests always have a voice in shaping the program. Participation on the Advisory Board will offered online on a rotating basis to a selection of members across all tiers.

The above are all in addition to the existing benefits at the existing three levels -- Classic, Select and Elite -- but new levels in the future were hinted at, and are likely to be similar to Royal Caribbean's Diamond Plus level for their super-elite frequent passengers.

“We will continue to provide members in every tier of the Captain’s Club with the recognition and rewards they’ve come to expect, while adding several new enhancements over the course of this year,” said Hanrahan. “We also want to ensure that our members have the opportunity to quickly advance to the next tier. That’s why we count tier credits versus purely counting cruises. Tier credits are earned simply by sailing with us, but we also award additional credits for cruises of 12 or more nights, and for booking certain stateroom and suite categories. As a result, members can more quickly advance to the next tier.”

“What we’re rolling out today, combined with everything we’ll be adding to the program over the course of this year, will add up to what I’m confident will be the best loyalty program at sea,” Hanrahan added.

Here is the summary of the key benefits at all levels:
  • For Classic members (1-4 tier credits): Access to the loyalty desk and loyalty host; a premium onboard discount booklet; access to the new Captain’s Club Celebration event; a complimentary custom air request; pre-cruise specialty restaurant reservations; member reunion cruises; one-category upgrades (insides and oceanviews); and an online newsletter.
  • For Select members (5-9 tier credits): All of the benefits of Classic membership, plus priority embarkation, a complimentary wine seminar, priority status to shore excursion waitlist, an invitation to the senior officers’ cocktail party, 25% off any Internet package, complimentary pressing of two clothing items, and discounted laundry on cruises of 12 nights or more.
  • For Elite members (10 or more tier credits): All of the benefits of Select membership, plus a private shipboard departure lounge with continental breakfast, priority tender service, priority waitlist for dining room seating, elegant tea service, complimentary use of Thalassotherapy pool use on Celebrity Mercury, complimentary access to the Persian Garden (port days only), access to the new Captain’s Club Lounge at Michael’s Club, 90 free Internet minutes, one free item of dry cleaning, a complimentary bag of laundry (wash, dry, fold) and additional discounted laundry on cruises of 12 nights or more.

A comparison of all benefits by level, including some not discussed above can be found at Celebrity's New Captain's Club Benefits Chart.

My take? This is a significant upgrade to their program. Over the past 2 years, I've frequently discussed the Captain's Club with Celebrity execs and sales force, giving voice to my clients' (and my own) opinion that it was one of the least rewarding of the major brands, especially when compared to sister brand Royal Caribbean and to Princess. Much of the best of those two programs has been incorporated in some form, and based on conversations I've had with Celebrity over the past weeks, I have a sneaking suspicion that more elements of those other programs along with some innovative concepts will be added as they move forward with the later announcements this year.

While I think the most attention will be given to the Elite lounge in Michael's Club, and the internet access, I also find the laundry benefit to be huge, especially as cruises continue to become longer on Celebrity and airlines clamp down on luggage allowances. It will allow members to pack more efficiently and even return home with clean clothes, which is a wonderful benefit.

The devil is in the details when it comes to the internet benefit. Similar to when Princess had "unlimited" internet for their Platinum and Diamond members, "free" is defined as a certain package amount. Regardless, this benefit will be worth several hundred dollars to members, and reflects our changing society where we are increasingly unable or unwilling to be out of touch during our cruises.

Bravo, Celebrity, for a terrific first step. I'll anxiously be awaiting the rest of the enhancements! You're on the right path!

BREAKING NEWS About Azamara!

Azamara Cruises, the sister brand to Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, is getting a new President and CEO!

Since its inception, Azamara Cruises has come under the direction of Dan Hanrahan, President of Celebrity. However, they're going to give Azamara separate leadership under the helm of Larry Pimentel, who has formerly run Seabourn, Sea Dream and Cunard.

Information on what else this will mean to Azamara is still sketchy. My sources hinted last week that a separate past passenger loyalty program was "being evaluated" and I'd guess this would make that far more likely by the end of the year for a start. Other changes may be more logistical and behind the scenes and important more to the agency community than the guests.

I should have more information late this afternoon, and will post when I have it. In the meantime, you can read more at USA Today Cruise Log. Gene Sloan is updating his posts throughout the day. I'll add more information to this post as I receive it as well.

Celebrity Announces Open Dining Starting September

According to Gene Sloan, USA Today Cruise Editor, who is aboard the Celebrity Equinox in a special writers' preview, Celebrity has announced they will roll out open dining to the fleet beginning in September. This option is in addition to the traditional, set time dining to which Celebrity cruisers are accustomed.

There's been much discussion of the possibility on various cruise boards, and if you follow the industry and Celebrity in particular, this probably isn't a surprise, but Celebrity was the last hold out of the mainstream brands to go this direction. But it appears that Celebrity has learned from its competitors, and listened to its customers, and will do it a bit differently. Passengers will be able to make reservations for different times on different nights, avoiding the lines and waits at popular dining times. Reservations would be able to be made either before the cruise or upon boarding.

Mr Sloan reports:

"The dining experience is paramount to the Celebrity experience, (and) we felt a large percentage of our guests would say (they) would like open seating, but (they) would like to choose (their) time," Lutoff-Perlo explained during a press conference on the new Equinox.

Lutoff-Perlo says the reservation system would solve one of the biggest problems with open seating encountered by other lines: The tendency for passengers on open seating to arrive in unmanageable clumps -- forcing some to wait for a table. Lutoff-Perlo says the line wants to
avoid situations where passengers "have to wait for a half hour for a table because (they) came when everyone else did."

The reservation system, she says, allows passengers on the open-seating plan to vary the time they eat dinner from night to night but still know they have a table waiting for them when they head to dinner. Lutoff-Perlo says surveys of Celebrity passengers fleetwide showed that about 50% wanted the open-seating option. Notably, though, the percentage was lower among passengers sailing on the line's newest ship, the seven-month-old Solstice. Lutoff-Perlo says that's
likely because the 2,850-passenger Solstice already has a lot of dining flexibility thanks to its
many alternative restaurants.

One potential downside to the open seating plan: The line says it can't guarantee that passengers on the plan who make reservations for specific times in the dining room will eat alone. Two sets of
couples with the same reservation time, for instance, could be paired together at a table for four if all the tables for two already are taken.

"There are limited tables for two, so (guaranteed tables for two on open seating) is not something that were going to be able to accommodate," Celebrity CEO Dan Hanrahan noted.

I'm optimistic about this plan. It's clearly the direction cruising is going, and the complaint I hear about open dining options on other ships (and have noted myself) is the inconsistency of being able to make a reservation at differing times. If Celebrity has this all worked out, my hat is off to them! However, expect a few kinks if you're sailing in September and October - no matter the planning, changes like this do cause confusion.

You've Asked For It... And Happy Hours are Back!

It's been good to know I was missed in my blogging absence, but I have to say, I think my weekly posting of the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Happy Hours was missed more than my commentary. I can accept that - while I might be pithy at times, it's all about the savings, right?

And this week we start the new Azamara Deluxe Deals as well!

You all know the drill: The Celebrity and Royal Caribbean deals are good on Tuesday only. Call me prior to Tuesday to discuss your options and to be first in line when I can access the inventory at Midnight on Tuesday. Email is of course amber@cruiseresource.com.

The Azamara Deluxe Deals are a bit different. They will be on sale on alternating Wednesdays. The other provisions are the same - contact me in advance to discuss the options and to ensure I have you first in line. This week, I don't have the .pdf to post at this time (I'll edit later if it is released), but I'll list the specials below, including the air add-ons.

It's That Time of Year Again!

It's time for the major cruise lines to release their next year's set of itineraries! Spring is in the air, so of course you're beginning to think of your 2010 winter cruises, right? Well, the cruise lines are, and often with their itinerary announcements comes some wonderful offers (such as for Princess past passengers who book early), or best savings for those looking for specific time frames like Christmas or New Year's, or certain cabins for itineraries like Alaska.

It's also when we start to see trends in the industry, such as fewer ships seasonally in Alaska, South America and Australia/New Zealand, and get to learn what new itineraries may be announced for familiar ports or even ships sailing from new ports. Even if you're not actively planning for 2010/2011, it is interesting to watch the announcements to see if something new pops up which catches your fancy.

First up in the long series of releases will be Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara. Azamara kicks off the series on March 4 with their 2010 European deployment schedule, followed by Celebrity on March 5 with the opening of their much-anticipated Bermuda and Canada/New England itineraries.

The full opening schedule (subject to change) for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara can be found below:

Royal Caribbean 2010/2011 Deployment Opening Schedule
  • March 12 - Europe/Transatlantic
  • March 19 - Alaska
  • March 24 - Asia Summer
  • March 25 - Northeast (Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada/New England)
  • March 31 - Panama Canal
  • April 9 & 16 - Caribbean Year Round and Summer
  • April 22 - Short Caribbean, Bahamas
  • April 28 - Mexico
  • April 29 - Seasonal Caribbean
  • May 5 - Dubai
  • May 6 - Winter Europe
  • May 12 - Australia, Hawaii
  • May 14 - Asia Winter
  • July 15 - South America
Celebrity 2010/2011 Deployment Opening Schedule:
  • March 5 - Bermuda, Canada/New England
  • March 10 - Europe, Transatlantic
  • March 17 - Alaska
  • April 2 - Panama Canal
  • April 14 - South America
  • April 23 - Short Caribbean, Bahamas
  • April 30 - Seasonal Caribbean
Azamara 2010/2011 Deployment Opening Schedule
  • March 4 - Europe, Transatlantic
  • April 8 - Exotic Winter

I usually get the schedule of sailings a day or two prior to the official opening, so if there's an itinerary in which you're interested, or a port which you want to watch for new ships or itineraries, let me know! And of course, when you're ready to book one of the new dates, I'm here to assist you.

Chilly Days Happy Hour Specials from Chile!

Hello from Chile!

As we approach Spring Break period, the Happy Hour Specials tend to get a bit more thin, even this year. As always, however, if any of the sailings on offer this week appeal to you, these are extraordinary prices which are only available on Tuesday, February 3. Let me know if you're interested in booking!

Celebrity Names 2009 Partner of the Year - and We're It!

In an exciting announcement today, Celebrity Cruises has named my parent companies, World Travel Holdings and Cruises Inc., their 2009 Partner of the Year! This is due to our professionalism, creativity, sales and commitment to Celebrity Cruises, and in no small part due to our success with the Celebrity Solstice Charter cruise this past November.

Celebrity has long been one of my personal top partners, and have consistently supported my business, both with singles (in making available to me tools other agents don't utilize to reduce supplements when possible), and to my couples, families and groups. I hope you will join me in continuing to support Celebrity as they support us!

And in very timely related news, Celebrity and Azamara have also extended their ASAP Sale through February 28, 2009. If you need reminder of the sailings with additional onboard credit and the other benefits, just look at the Celebrity ASAP Sale flyer.

Thank you to all of you for supporting Cruises Inc. and Celebrity this past year!

Celebrity and Azamara Institute Auto-Tipping

Following the trend with the mainstream cruise lines, Azamara and Celebrity have announced a new gratuity policy, similar to that of most other lines. Effective for every sailing beginning on or after January 15, 2009, gratuities will be automatically applied to guests’ SeaPass account on a daily basis. This avoids the need for you to visit an ATM for cash prior to the end of the cruise, and averts any need to take time away from your vacation to calculate out the amounts due each staff member. (Of course, the policy does not apply to Celebrity Xpedition, where gratuities are already included in the fare.)

Below is the new gratuity structure:

Restaurant Service Per Person, Per Day
Waiter $3.65
Assistant Waiter $2.10
Dining Room Management $1.00

Stateroom Service
Butler (Suites Only) $3.50
Stateroom Service $3.50 ($4.00 for Concierge Class/Aqua Class)

Alternative Service
Other Service Personnel $1.25

The above amounts total $11.50 per person, per day for guests in staterooms; $12.00 per person, per day for
guests in Concierge Class or Aqua Class accommodations; and $15.00 per person, per day for guests in suites.

Do know that the amounts can be adjusted at the guest's request, and of course you may request the removal of the auto tips entirely.

Automatic tipping is a hot button for many cruisers, but I believe it is a convenience, and I'm in favor of it. I've never once had an instance onboard where I didn't feel that the crew deserved the base amounts, and often tip additionally in cash for those who have provided extraordinary service.

While cruisers from outside the US (and some even in North America) are accustomed to tips being included in basic prices in restaurants and other service venues (or think they should be), the fact is that American-based cruise lines base their crew salaries on the presumption of tips being given to the service personnel, and the crew rely on them. Yes, there is tip pooling, but the lines do allow those who are given extra tips, beyond the basic amount to keep the additional amounts. So there truly is no reason to remove the auto-tips and tip with cash, as the pooling still does occur.

Why would a crew member voluntarily turn over a cash tip to be pooled rather than just keep it? Because it reflects badly in their evaluation if their passengers are shown as not tipping. Having auto-tips removed, and a crew member not reporting tips given in cash, indicates to the line that the crew member may not be performing adequately, and may not consider that crew member for promotion, better assignments, etc. So feel free to auto-tip, and just reward those you wish with additional gratuity in cash as you have always done.

It's That Happy Hour Time!

Once again, it's Happy Hour for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. Many, many offers for exotics, with a few closer to home mixed in. Nice reduced supplements for solos this week, too.

We're still a bit early if you're looking for spring break dates - expect those in the next couple weeks or so.

I will be in South America and Antarctica over the next Happy Hours, but I will try to post these from there. If I'm unsuccessful in being able to download the .pdfs, I apologize in advance, but sometimes the cruise lines block that access onboard. If you're looking for a specific date, feel free to contact my covering agents while I'm gone. You can reach me or them through my email at amber@cruiseresource.com.

Wave Season Has Arrived! Summary of Offers and NEW Oceania Sales Event!

When my phone rang this morning at 5:44AM, I knew that the first day of Wave Season had arrived. So far, the rest of my Monday has followed suit, and I'd say the rush is on!

What is Wave Season? It's the cruise industry term for the first quarter of the year, which traditionally has the highest number of bookings. In fact, more than half the yearly bookings are usually made in these three months, especially in January. Think of a bell curve, with lows in December and April, and there is a "wave" of bookings this first quarter.

The past couple years, Wave Season has been less of a tsunami and more of just a good surfing day, with bookings spread out more throughout the year. Whether that's because of the growing sophistication of cruisers who book according to their personal needs rather than as a result of increased marketing which takes place this time of year, and have learned when is the best time to book, or other factors, I'm not sure. This year, the industry experts are expecting a little quieter season, but judging from today's responses from my clients, I'm not so sure. While my clients are booking on average closer in, they're still booking. The Wave is On!

To remind you all of the various specials the cruise lines are running, here are some of my past "head's up" posts to help you choose your next cruise:

RCCL, Celebrity and Azamara ASAP Promotion

Holland America View and Verandah Sale/Vacation Stimulus Plan

NCL Freestyle Savings Event

Princess is running their "Balcony Bonanza" and Carnival has some upgrade offers, but nothing out of the ordinary for either of them.

Later today, Oceania will be announcing their Historic 5th Anniversary Celebration of Savings with HUGE reductions. They're offering up to $2,000/cabin discounts off their 2-for-1 sailings in Europe with free air for their 2009 season and 25% single supplements, and up to $1,500/cabin discounts off their 2-for-1 2009/2010 Winter Season sailings, with free air, free pre-paid gratuities, $500 onboard credits and 25% single supplements. Yeah, baby! That's what I'm talking about! These Oceania offers become available for sale on January 7, and I'll be first in line to book myself as these are crazy fabulous prices.

There are a lot of reasons to book, especially in the next week. If you're considering any sailings for the next year, give me a call or email now to see how we can maximize your savings and benefits!

Of course, for close-in bookings, don't forget about the weekly Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Happy Hours and Carnival Pack N Go Specials.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity & Azamara Want YOU!

In an unusual move, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara are giving you advance notice of their "wave" season offers for cruises booked in January and February. They're calling this the ASAP Promotion - Amazing Ships, Amazing Perks!

First up is from Royal Caribbean. They're offering 50% reduced deposit AND onboard credits between $50-200/cabin on a huge number of 2009 and even 2010 sailings. You can find all the details at RCCL ASAP Sale.

Celebrity and Azamara are on the ASAP bandwagon too! Both are also offering 50% reduced deposit and up to $200/cabin onboard credit. Azamara sweetens it even further by including pre-paid gratuities, too! Below are the specific flyers for Celebrity and Azamara:

Celebrity ASAP Sale

Azamara ASAP Sale

A few interesting idiosyncrasies to take note of: the onboard credit (and pre-paid gratuity) offers must be booked between January 5 and January 19, 2009. However, all bookings January 1 through February 28 are eligible for the reduced deposits. So if the sailing you're looking at is on the flyer for onboard credits, best to book between January 5-19. If it's not, you can still get the reduced deposit by booking as early as January 1.

Finally... been thinking of getting a group together for a family get-away, work retreat, or other social or religious organization gathering? All three lines are offering easier access to free berths for the organizer or to share among all participants. Call me for details!

Deadline for Submitting Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara Shareholder Statements

Royal Caribbean International has recently changed their rules for shareholder benefits. If you are a shareholder and currently booked for 2009 and 2010, or thinking of booking one of their brands (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity or Azamara), this affects you.

As of January 1, 2009, shareholder onboard credits will no longer be able to be combined with other onboard credits, such as those you receive for booking onboard, credits I may offer as part of a group, or other special sales promotions or onboard benefits. This is a major change in their program, and important enough I thought you should know.

If you are a shareholder, and you are already booked for 2009 or 2010, you MUST send in your proof of shareholder ownership information and have it applied to your booking(s) prior to December 31. That doesn't mean send it in on December 31 - it actually has to be on your booking by that date. If you do that, your credits WILL still be combinable. After that date, you get one onboard benefit, that's it.

If you are a shareholder and are considering booking for 2009 or 2010, using an onboard open booking (such as a RCCL NEXT booking or Celebrity Passages booking), in order to receive both the onboard credit and the shareholder onboard credit benefit, you MUST book by December 31, 2008 and have the shareholder benefit applied by that date. Again, that doesn't mean you can wait until December 31 to book and send in your verification - it all must be complete and on your booking by 12/31.

I am going through my clients and for those for whom I have current shareholder statements, I'm proactively sending them in for you. However, if you do have a 2009 or 2010 booking through me, please also email me at amber@cruiseresource.com to ensure that I have you taken care of.

If you're booked through me, but usually take care of your own shareholder verification, either send that in for your future bookings immediately, or forward the proof of ownership to me (as an email attachment), and I'll submit it on your behalf.

There are still people at RCI who are fighting to reinstate the combinability, but in the current economic situation, they're fighting an uphill battle. Hopefully at some time in the future, they'll be successful, and it will again be combinable. In the meantime, at least they got us the reprieve until December 31 so we can still submit for your current bookings.

Please call or email with any questions you have and let me know how I can be of assistance, either with submitting for your current bookings, or making a new one for you in time.

And if you're wondering what in the world I'm talking about, shareholders of at least 100 shares of Royal Caribbean International or Carnival Corporation stock are entitled to onboard credits on every cruise. It's an often-overlooked benefit to stock ownership, and a good option for frequent cruisers to pursue. If you'd like more information on these benefits, email or call and I'll be happy to explain the programs.

If It's Friday... It Must Be Time For...

... Next week's Happy Hours from Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, PLUS a special offer from Celebrity for 2008 bookings!

Celebrity still has some nice space for 2008 sailings, and I am offering a special $200/cabin onboard credit for any Celebrity booking which sails in 2008! Happy Hour, regular booking, anything which sails, regardless of price or category. So if you're still thinking that getting away for the holidays sounds good, let's see if we can find something for you!

As usual, the Happy Hour fares are good for one day only, and that's Tuesday, December 16. I have access to pricing starting at 12:01AM, so for best cabin selection and to ensure availability, give me a call by Monday so we can discuss your preferences and options.

Lots of reduced single supplements in these specials, too, for my solo cruisers.

Fuel Supplement is History... For Now

Yielding to pressure from consumers, travel agencies and their competitors, Royal Caribbean International announced late today that fuel supplements will be suspended on all their US brands (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara) for all sailings January 1, 2009 and beyond. New bookings made starting Monday, December 8 will not be assessed the supplement, and for those already booked for 2009 and 2010, those who have already paid the supplement will be refunded in the form of an onboard credit, and those yet to pay final will have the supplement removed from their invoices.

Similar to the announcements made yesterday by the other major companies, there is a bit of a caveat in the release:

The company reserves the right to reinstate fuel supplement charges if the price of West Texas
Intermediate fuel exceeded $65 per barrel, on the quarterly milestone dates mentioned in the
company’s October 24, 2008, press release.

That is very telling. In talking with cruise lines today about both new and existing bookings, several reps were clearly coached with a new script which indicates they do reserve the right to reinstate the supplement, even on bookings where it has been removed or was never implemented in the first place. That means that a supplement could have been on a booking, removed, and if fuel goes high enough ($65-70/barrel depending on cruise line), added back on again.

Personally, my guess is that the Florida Attorney General won't stand for it being replaced on a booking which was created without it or from which it was removed, and will force the cruise lines back into negotiations should it become relevant. But for a true ruling on that, only time and West Texas Intermediate (or Sweet Crude) prices will tell.

Celebrity Passages Booking - Special Offer!

As I mentioned in a previous post, those booking a Celebrity cruise with me prior to December 1 (including the post-Thanksgiving Happy Hours) may be eligible for an onboard credit. It turns out I can extend that further!

I have available to me the ability to create a Celebrity Passages open booking for you, just like you were booking onboard! For a $100/person deposit, you will be eligible for an onboard credit on your next booking! The credit varies by the cost of your cruise. This is the exact program offered onboard the Celebrity/Azamara ships, and is extended to me because of our recent Celebrity Solstice Charter.

You MUST book this with me by 5P Eastern on Monday, December 1, 2008 to be eligible, and it can be an open booking with no specific future sailing identified.

Call me this weekend or on Monday for details and to take advantage of this terrific offer! If you've been considering Celebrity, but don't yet know what you want to book, this offer is perfect for you!

Celebrity Solstice Review

Thanks to a client, I realized that while I'd sent out my Solstice review to my newsletter subscribers, I hadn't posted it here. My mistake and I apologize!

The review is quite long, so if you'd rather read it on a larger web page, the full text can be found at Celebrity Solstice Review. But the full text is also below. Happy reading! Let me know if you have any questions about this magnificent ship.

Ships have an aura about them. An energy. If you're attuned to it, they reach out and speak to you. And the Solstice has spoken to me. It says "home."

There's a lot to the Solstice. There are the whiz-bang aspects like the 2-story wine tower in the Grand Epernay Restaurant, and the undeniable attraction of the Lawn Club on Deck 15. But there's something else running through this ship. A sense of achievement. Of finally accomplishing the goal of Celebrity. Of that intangible mix of style and sense of comfort in itself that the Solstice achieves. For those who appreciate what Premium sets out to be, this is the best it has to offer.

From the time you step onboard, the clean lines, yet warmth of welcoming envelop you. The decor is without a doubt upscale, trending toward contemporary, but without the starkness of true modern. The colors are light but warm. No assault on the senses anywhere. It's subdued but elegant and trendy all at the same time.

Because of the use of light colors, the ship could have looked stark in areas, such as the main Epernay dining room or Blu restaurant, but they instead are light and warm. Columns are softened by draperies hanging down multiple stories. Shapes are rounded, nothing assaults you. Everything is fresh and alive. Even the tree suspended in the atrium. (Let me tell you, there's quite a story about that tree!)

The Millennium Class on Celebrity set a standard of edginess, and Celebrity has experimented a lot with programming and changes in how it markets itself in the past 6 years, some successfully, some not quite so much, but it was all an evolution which sees its culmination in the Solstice Class ships. There's an intangible sense of being without trying too hard here, yet being absolutely current and comfortable in the trends which exist peacefully together in the public spaces. In so many instances, this ship is like your favorite friend with whom you feel comfortable and at home, but who is also is the perfect hostess who says "relax, let me do this" as you enjoy just being together.

Onboard both a pre-inaugural and charter sailing (on my own dime) of the Solstice, I've spent a bit of time getting to know her. In both a standard balcony cabin and Aqua Class cabin, I've seen the public image Celebrity is putting on display, but also her every-day working being. And I'm very happy onboard.

Several people have commented on her cabin size. Celebrity may have made a slight misstep in initially promoting her as being significantly larger in her standard balcony cabins. On first impression, they are probably shorter than average. But there's a flow which doesn't exist in most mainstream cabin designs. A full-size sofa dominates the room, and makes the cabin far more livable than expected (though I think it is a tad too long which affects other things - more on that later). While a lack of hanging closet space is of initial concern, the well-designed drawer and cupboard space begins to overcome that hesitation. This is not a ship which gives up her secrets immediately, but upon living with her, becomes more and more comfortable as time goes on.

And the bathrooms are a joy. More shelf and storage space than two divas could use on an extended journey, unless they need a 12-step plan from online cosmetic shopping... and even then they'll probably have enough room to store their toiletries in comfort. Larger passengers may feel initial constraints on the commode, but they are quickly overcome.

The public rooms flow comfortably from one to another. The intentional placement of specialty restaurants together in one area makes dining in any of them easy and accessible. Decks 4 and 5 primarily serve as the central hub of the ship. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't passengers who rarely stray from these decks - from the theatre in the bow to Cova Café (now named Café el Bacio) mid-ship, the casino, martini bar, Tastings on Five, Gelatteria and Quasar nightclub, there's little reason other than large appetite to stray elsewhere... but so much else to explore!

There seems to be music everywhere, something I've enjoyed on other lines such as MSC. Live music. Lots of different styles. But it makes everything seem more alive and relaxing.

This is truly a large ship, with all the whiz-bang aspects you'd expect. But despite this, it retains a sense of connection. Part of this is achieved through the mid-ship glass elevators which are the central hub of the ship, from Deck 3 Pursers to Deck 15 Lawn Club. Believe me, you'll be riding these frequently. Fortunately, they're fast, efficient and plentiful. There are no disconnects on this ship - no time that you need to go up or down a deck to get bow to aft (except the very top decks), nor a sense of confusion or misdirection.

And I've not even begun to address the top decks. Let me say I'm not a pool person. I'm fair skinned and haired, and have never been a sun worshipper. But even I find attraction in the two main pool areas onboard. The Serenity pool is my retreat, but the main pool area is comfortable (with padded lounges which I'd previously experienced on Azamara, the Deluxe sister brand of Celebrity), great music, and other interesting seating making full use of both sun and shade on 2 levels.

And then there's the Lawn Club. Okay, I admit it, I thought this was merely a gimmick. A space where Celebrity could say they have something no one else has. But you know, the basic connection to land lends an element of peace and pleasure I didn't expect. So many of us live so much of our lives in a concrete jungle, that even if we have yards, we've forgotten the pleasure of relaxing on a lawn and feeling grass under our feet (bare or shod). The Lawn Club brings back that pleasure of running in the grass we had as children, the romance of a picnic in a park we may have experienced when we were courting (if we were lucky, or if we have a good fantasy life), and the joy of living earth we don't often have time to experience. Okay, Celebrity, I get it now!

At one end of the Lawn Club is the perpetually-popular Sunset Bar, one of the best places to watch a sailaway, and at the other is the Corning Museum Glass Show. Having seen a glass blowing demonstration in Venice, I was a bit skeptical about this, but let me tell you, this isn't any glass show you've seen before. These truly are masters, and make sure the audience is involved and kept educated, informed and fascinated. I went to the night-time demonstration, and I think that's best for seeing the "glow" of the glass as they work, but most there had already been to one of the daytime shows and came back again - it's that interesting and that much fun. I expected the glass show to be a one-time thing and then never be interested again, but next time I'm on a Solstice-Class ship, I'll be back there. Oh, by the way, because the Corning Museum of Glass is a non-profit museum, they don't sell any of their works. The ones made onboard are raffled (no cost at this time for a ticket - any cost in the future will go toward a charity) to passengers in attendance at a show, or donated to charities for auctions.

Opposite the Lawn Club in the bow of the ship on the top deck is the Sky Bar. Live music in the evening (lots of people seem to go from an after-dinner drink in Crush (martini bar) up to Sky and finally ending the evening in Quasar night club). Absolutely beautiful room with panoramic glass windows. Easy to miss if you're not intentionally going there, but a great entertainment venue and daytime retreat.

I'm not going to go over all the bars, but wanted to touch on a few highlights: Crush is the martini bar (on steroids) with some excellent bartenders, Quasar the nightclub works well and is perfectly sized for Celebrity - though on this ship it may be more popular than usual. But the find of this ship for me is the Cellar Masters wine bar. This bar has a unique system for wine tasting utilizing "taps" into bottles where you can select either a small tasting, half glass or full pour. It allows you to self-select tastings from several different bottles before you decide what you'd like to fully enjoy. Great for a small group of people to share the tastings, without any wait for a sommelier to assist you. It's also perfect to just hop in there to grab a glass of wine before you head to dinner.

There are several other venues onboard for lounging, drinking and entertainment, and I went to them all, but part of the fun for you will be discovering them on your own.

Three specialty restaurants (plus the exclusive restaurant Blu) on board, and each one deserves its own praise. Murano is the top-flight restaurant, for a truly elegant experience, is a delight and bargain at $30/person. Tuscan Grill, the Italian Restaurant, isn't like any chain Italian you've experienced. The quality is every bit as good as Murano, but at $25/person, and a comfortable environment, is sure to be a favorite, especially with their brunches at sea. I could easily eat there a couple nights as there were multiple items in each category I wanted to try! Silk Road, at $20/person is the real find, and for those who like Asian food will probably be a multiple-night experience. They have a terrific concept of small plates, large plates and sushi, all included, with the small plates intended to serve as appetizers, large plates to be shared family-style (they suggest one per person and adjust the serving size to the number of people in the party). Excellent quality food!

Blu is, at this point, exclusive to those booked in Aqua Class cabins (it is their assigned dining room), and to suite passengers as space is available. Food there emphasizes flavors derived from and around preparation methods such as reduction sauces rather than cream-based recipes. I had a seared ahi tuna main course there last night which was wonderful - peppered, intense, tender and very satisfying. Others at my table had a filet mignon they really enjoyed. Several different choices, including vegetarian (though I didn't notice if it was vegan). The soups are lower sodium (yippee!) and scrumptious, salads are fresh, desserts indulgent but relatively guilt-free. For me, Blu gives me exactly the flavor intensity and variety I seek with fresher, lighter foods, and I'll be very happy eating here every day. They also serve breakfast for the Aqua Class passengers if they wish. It's spa cuisine -- what you'd receive at the most luxurious, indulgent spas, not a "work you until your love handles fall off and feed you sticks and grass" kind of spa.

And if you want a lighter lunch, there's the Spa Cafe open to everyone forward on Deck 12. This will be familiar to those who have sailed any of Celebrity's Millennium-Class ships.

The main Epernay dining room is stunningly beautiful The first impression is that it's white, but it's not. It's warmer than that. And very comfortable. The kitchen was designed around the new menus, and they do seem to work better here than on the ships which have been adapted to them. But we were informed that the new Executive Chef will be going out to all the older ships and making sure they're brought up to this level.

The buffet is done in stations, many repeated. Several people have commented to me how quiet it seems up there, even at peak times. While neither sailing was full (no one in insides or oceanview cabins), the ship is still more than 3/4 full and it seems to be working up there. I never got to experience the alternative dining in the evening up there (4 days is simply not enough), but others said they enjoyed it. And, of course, the aft Sunset Bar continues to be a favorite, but it's a bit hidden away at the back of the Lawn Club.

Is this ship perfect? Of course not. You need to be prepared for the additional charges, and additional benefits, from partaking in the specialty venues. But they're worth every penny. On more of a budget? You'll be very happy, but be prepared to be tempted.

The cabins take a bit of time to find all their hidden attributes Unpacking at first is a challenge. The key is to keep looking at all the spaces. Cabinets over the bed perfect for sweaters and other folded clothing (even for a sub-5-foot person such as myself, though I did have to crawl up on the bed to access). Thoughtful drawers and other spaces to hold smaller items. The bed has been raised slightly to accommodate a larger suitcase (though some space is taken up with the life vests now residing in a basket under the bed). A safe large enough even for my 17" laptop (FINALLY!) And the long-overdue touch of a lighted clock on the telephone (but still lacking a sleep timer on the television - come on, everyone, do you not realize people are addicted to their sleep timers on their bedroom tvs?)

Cabins alternate in design - left and right. Forward cabins in each pair have the bed closer to the outside, while those farther aft reverse the design. This is especially important for those traveling together but not as a couple. For those who would like to have their beds closer to the balcony, choose the cabin in a pair which is closer to the bow of the ship. To have the sofa near the balcony, go with the one farther aft.Connecting cabin design has been made easier, too, as there is an "anteroom" into connecting cabins. There is an outer set of doors to the hallway, left open when the rooms are not booked by people wishing connecting, but closed and serving as a "front door" to the two cabins when occupied by friends or family. That way, you can have the doors to the individual cabins open, with just one outer door. Brilliant! This in no way takes space away from the cabins, as there's an indented entry to all the standard cabins. But it gives those traveling together both access and privacy when desired. This is the same design which will be used on the Oasis of the Seas.

There are a lot of little touches in the cabins, ones I'm going to credit to the 5 ladies who contributed to the design. Such as a total of 3 plugs at the vanity (two US design 110v outlets, one a European 2-plug round 220v outlet), a low-level nightlight automatic in the bathroom (doesn't assault you in the middle of the night, but does provide just enough light, and a foot bar in the shower so you can easily shave your legs, or even wash or moisturize your legs more easily.

There are some brand new, exclusive spa treatments on this ship in the Aqua Spa. One is a deep tissue bamboo massage for those who really appreciate a deep rub. There's a poultice massage similar to the hot stones so many of us are familiar with, but instead of heated stones, they use heated bags of herbs and oils. Finally, there's a table version of a Thai stretching massage for deep stretching and relaxation.

Since I'm talking spa, probably time to discuss the Aqua Class cabins. They're identical in design to the standard balcony or Concierge cabins, but with added amenities. In addition to the Concierge benefits (such as afternoon canapés, fruit plate, binoculars in the cabin, etc.), there are added benefits to the cabins themselves. There's an aromatherapy container discreetly placed over the mini-bar, using reeds to distribute a very light scent. I'm pretty sensitive to aromas, and this one didn't cause me any distress, nor was it conspicuous in the room. There's free bottled water and flavored teas for Aqua Class cabins, and other amenities such as spa toiletries, including foot spray, facial mist, and lip balm and even loofah slippers. But most apparent is the "shower tower" in the bathroom. Instead of one, fixed shower head, there's a hand-held adjustable-height rainwater shower head, and 5 additional "body blaster" heads which massage your body and legs. At first, I felt I needed a higher advanced degree in order to properly operate it, but quickly got the hang of it and appreciated it from the first shower. Very nice!

But in addition to the cabin amenities, there's the other main benefits to these cabins as well: free access to the Relaxation Room in the bow of Deck 11 (the deck on which all these cabins are located), a spa concierge staff to book and coordinate your appointments (no more waiting in line to book your treatments), free, unlimited use of the Persian Garden thermal suite and private entrance to the spa (no more feeling out of place riding the elevators in your robe) and free access throughout the cruise to the Aqua Spa. I'm not a big spa person - occasional massages, more often acupuncture treatments, but as I'm sitting and writing this portion, I'm sitting in the Relaxation Room, drinking the fruit-infused water, and wondering when I can book this for a longer sailing. Yeah, I'm hooked.

Don't forget that the Aqua Class also has the wonderful Blu dining room I discussed above.

This class of cabins is perfect for a girlfriends' getaway, mother-daughter trips, couples who enjoy spas, or even if you'll never use the spa, but would like the peace of a floor without young children (cabins are double occupancy only) and a beautiful, QUIET, observation room in the bow for sea days. Looking around this room, there are solo and double loungers, and right now, more men in here than women. People are napping, reading, I see one gentleman looking over a future cruise book, obviously looking at the deck plan, I'm guessing for planning his next cruise. There are even blankets in here so you can snuggle up and nap.

It's also perfect for those who would like a bit better, lighter, and more private dining experience that Blu offers as compared to the main dining room. I anticipate there will be quite a few in this class who book it and never step foot in the spa. If you generally book a Concierge cabin, and any of the benefits of the Aqua Class are appealing, you absolutely should move into Aqua Class.

I do have a few quibbles about the ship. I'm not a fan of large ships with 2 main elevator banks, forward and just back from mid-ship. I think it makes for terribly long walks for those in aft cabins. I'd love to have at least a passenger stairwell back there for when you're wanting to go from an aft cabin to say one of the aft bars, or even down a level or two. If you're in an aft cabin, be prepared to feel like you're constantly covering the same territory. And this ship is large enough it can be a long walk from an aft balcony to the aft dining room or aft specialty restaurant like Tuscan Grill. (And yes, that will hold true for the Oasis of the Seas when she comes out as well).

I do think that a bit shorter sofa and a bit longer, even rounded, closet, with more hanging space would have been useful. Thinking of the longer Mediterranean sailings or two women traveling together, the current closet design is a bit cramped. Even shortening the sofa just a few inches would make the closet easier to access as there's not a lot of room to stand there. I understand it's even more tight in cabins in the configuration with the bed next to the closet, especially when the beds are separated into two twins.

Most of you know I've long been a fan of Celebrity and Azamara. They're upscale without stuffiness. Edgy and current without being elitist. But Solstice is entirely different than anything Celebrity has done before. This is the design and style you wish your every-day lifestyle allowed. The comfortable elegance and effortless comfort we'd like to project in our lives. The break from our everyday which gives us friendly acceptance without trying too hard to impress, but has just enough style to satisfy the wow factor we crave in a vacation. After all, we're leaving our every day behind, and we deserve a bit of pampering, don't we?

Were you expecting pictures? There are people out there far more talented (and comfortable) in taking architectural pictures which convey the essence of a ship. Those who have read me for awhile know that I excel not at pictures of rooms but at connecting to wildlife and nature. So I apologize to those who wanted pics of the cabins and public areas; others have done a far better job than I could have. While I'm a photographer when it comes to wildlife, on land and at sea, I'm only a "happy snapper" at taking ship pictures, and I'd do you a disservice in passing those along. But if you want a mental or emotional picture of your experience on this ship? I'm your girl.

Yes, I'm an unabashed fan. But also an unbiased one. I find benefits in all lines from Carnival to Seabourn. The key is finding the right fit for you. For those who have found the Premium lines a bit hum drum in the past few years, I think this is what you've been looking for. It's an unexpected pleasure in times of stress and uncertainty. And with her first sister ship to be inaugurated next year, Equinox, overall an incomparable value.

It's also a ship I'll be begging to come back aboard soon, and if what I've written appeals to you, so should you. It's lived up to the hype. And beyond. It won't have the over-the-top elements of sister brand Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, but it's intended for a different audience. And it sets out for what it intended to do. Beautifully.

The Solstice in nature represents the pinnacle of the year - the longest day in summer, the shortest in winter. A day that cultures have observed for millennia as a turning point in their life and cause for celebration and communal party. Celebrity's Solstice is well named, as it is a turning point for Premium cruising, and definitely should be enjoyed and celebrated. Ancient cultures knew that celebration was an important part of their stressful, every-day struggle to survive, and it's possibly even more true now in our busy, often disconnected lives. Take this opportunity to create your own Solstice celebration - any time of the year.
